The King Shall Come

We will sing, we will sing
With one voice of praise we bring!
We will sing, we will sing
God is with us, Christ the King!

The Lutheran hymn, The King Shall Come, has become popular lately, and as I read through this old hymn I was inspired and moved by it’s depth and richness of lyric. I was also inspired to write an additional stanza of praise to accompany the verses or simply to stand alone as a chorus of praise:

We will sing, we will sing
With one voice of praise we bring!
We will sing, we will sing
God is with us, Christ the King!

I think this hymn was originally written with the Advent season in mind, but the words take me to lent and Easter as well.

The King shall come when morning dawns
And light triumphant breaks,
When beauty gilds the eastern hills
And life to joy awakes

Not as of old a little child,
To bear and fight and die,
But crowned with glory like the sun
That lights the morning sky.

Oh, brighter than the rising morn
When Christ, victorious, rose
And left the lonesome place of death
Despite the rage of foes.

Oh, brighter than that glorious morn
Shall dawn upon our race
The day when Christ in splendor comes
And we shall see his face.

The King shall come when morning dawns
And light and beauty brings.
Hail, Christ the Lord! Your people pray:
Come quickly, King of kings.
